The most common service we offer is individual counseling. We also offer marriage, couples, and family counseling.
-
Yes! We welcome new clients, although availability varies by counselor and can change throughout the year. Contact our office and we’ll help you find the best available fit for your needs.
-
Our clients consist of adults, teens, and children.
-
Both! If you are using insurance to pay for services, you will need to confirm that your insurance plan covers online counseling services.
-
Yes. What you share with your counselor is generally private and confidential. There are certain situations in which counselors are legally or ethically required to disclose information, such as concerns about immediate safety or suspected abuse or neglect. Your counselor will review confidentiality and its limits with you so you know what to expect.
-
Scheduling an appointment is easy! Just call, text, or email. If you are planning to use your insurance plan to pay for services, you need to complete a couple of steps first….
If you have a private/group health plan (i.e. BCBS, United Healthcare), call the Member Service number on the back of your card to get some information about your behavioral health coverage.
Does my health plan cover behavioral health or counseling?
Is a referral from my primary care doctor required?
Do I have a deductible that needs to be met before my plan will cover services?
How much is my co-pay?
How many sessions will my plan cover per year?
-
Your first appointment will be an intake session. The focus of an intake session is gathering information and building a foundation for the therapeutic relationship. Your counselor will ask questions about your presenting problems, your history, counseling goals, and current situation. This is a great opportunity for you and your counselor to get to know each other and for you to decide whether your counselor feels like the right fit.
For new clients under 16 years of age, intake appointments are for parents only.
We want parents to have a space to share their concerns freely. This also helps build integrity in the relationship between the counselor and child.
-
You don’t have to figure that out on your own. Tell us a little about what brings you to counseling and what you’re looking for, and we’ll help connect you with a counselor whose experience and approach may be a good fit. If we don’t have the right fit within our practice, we’re happy to help point you toward other options.
-
Finding the right counselor is essential to your therapeutic journey. If you feel that your current counselor isn’t a good fit for you, we encourage you to reach out to us. We have other counselors available that may be a better fit for you.
If none of our counselors meet your needs, we are committed to assisting you in finding a suitable professional outside of our agency. Your comfort and well-being are our top priorities, and we are here to support you every step of the way.
-
In most cases, you do not need a referral to begin counseling. However, some insurance plans may require one for your services to be covered. If you plan to use insurance, we recommend calling the Member Services number on the back of your insurance card to confirm whether a referral is required.
-
No, our team is currently made up of professional counselors.
A professional counselor is a Masters- or PhD-level mental health professional who is approved by a state licensure board to diagnose and treat mental health disorders. For medication management, consult with your primary care doctor or a psychiatrist.

Counseling for Children & Families
-
At Brooks Counseling, we believe parents and caregivers are an important part of a child’s progress. Counseling isn’t about dropping your child off and expecting the counselor to “fix” the problem—we work together as a team.
Many concerns children experience are best addressed with support both in counseling and at home. This may include parent check-ins, changes to routines or structure, setting healthy boundaries, reducing screen time, practicing new skills at home, or being open to feedback from your child’s counselor.
The level of involvement will look different depending on your child’s age and needs, and we also work to protect the trust and privacy that are important to the counseling relationship. However, consistent parent or caregiver participation is an important part of treatment. If recommended parental involvement is not possible or a family is unwilling to participate in the treatment process, we may need to discuss whether continuing counseling is appropriate.
Our goal isn’t to blame parents or children—it’s to give the whole family the best opportunity for meaningful, lasting progress.
-
Yes! We offer play-based therapy for children. Play gives children a natural, age-appropriate way to express themselves, process emotions, and work through difficult experiences.
-
Yes. We work with families experiencing conflict, communication difficulties, parenting concerns, life transitions, and other challenges. The goal is to help families better understand one another and move forward together.
Concerns & Therapy Approaches
-
Yes. Anxiety and depression are two of the most common concerns we help people navigate. Counseling is tailored to you, your experiences, and what you want to work toward.
-
Yes. Our counselors work with clients who have experienced trauma and PTSD. We offer several therapeutic approaches and can help connect you with a counselor who fits your needs, whether that’s with us or another practice.
-
Yes. We offer EMDR therapy. If you’re interested in EMDR, we can help connect you with a counselor who is trained in this approach.
-
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It’s a therapeutic approach often used to help people process trauma and other distressing experiences. Your counselor can help determine whether EMDR is a good fit for you.
-
Yes. We offer Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), an approach that can help with managing difficult emotions, handling distress, improving relationships, and developing healthier coping skills.
Couples Counseling
-
Yes. We work with couples facing communication difficulties, conflict, life changes, and other relationship concerns. Counseling can also be helpful for couples who simply want to strengthen their relationship.
-
You don’t have to wait until your relationship is in crisis. Couples counseling can be helpful when you feel stuck, keep having the same disagreements, struggle to communicate, or simply want to understand each other better.
Appointments & Policies
-
If you need to cancel your appointment, please notify us at least 24 hours in advance. Cancellations made with less than 24 hours' notice, or missed appointments without notice, will incur a session fee of $100.00. This fee cannot be billed to your insurance and applies to both in-person and telehealth appointments.
Your scheduled appointment is reserved for one hour exclusively for you. As a result, short-notice cancellations and no-shows prevent us from compensating our counselors and offering that time to others.
Session fees do not apply to Medicaid recipients but repeated missed appointments or late cancellations will result in termination of services.
-
Your appointment time is reserved exclusively for you. When an appointment is missed or canceled with less than 24 hours’ notice, there usually isn’t enough time to offer that hour to another client.
Our counselors are compensated based on the appointments scheduled with them, so late cancellations and no-shows also mean they have set aside an hour for which they cannot be compensated. The late cancellation/no-show fee helps account for that reserved time.
We understand that unexpected things happen, and the fee is never intended to be punitive. It simply helps us respect our counselors’ time while keeping appointment times available for clients who need them.
-
Yes. We understand that emergencies and unexpected situations happen. If you believe your circumstances should be considered, please contact our office and ask for a Late Cancellation/No-Show Fee Appeal Form.
Once submitted, your request will be reviewed thoughtfully and you’ll receive a decision by email. You may also provide supporting documentation if there is additional information you would like us to consider.
Please keep in mind that submitting an appeal does not guarantee the fee will be refunded. Our cancellation policy helps protect appointment times reserved exclusively for each client, respect our counselors’ time, and keep appointments available for others who need care.
